FIBER OPTIC TRANSMISSION TECHNOLOGY

Course Details

Course Objectives:

To equip participants with a practical, end-to-end understanding of the role of fiber optics in cellular backhaul networks.

Emphasis is placed on how fiber connects the BTS, aggregation, and core network layers, as implemented by Kenya’s top mobile operators.

Trainees will gain real-world experience in fiber splicing and testing, using actual deployment tools and test equipment at the training center.

Course Highlights

  • Understanding Cellular Network Architecture — Build foundational knowledge of how mobile networks operate from the mobile device to the core network, including components like BTS, BSC/RNC, transmission nodes, and core systems (MSC/MME/SGW). Trainees will visualize the full signal flow and data path.
  • Positioning Transmission Technologies in the Network — Identify where fiber optic and microwave transmission systems fit within the network, distinguishing fronthaul, backhaul, and midhaul roles.
  • Hands-On Fiber Transmission Techniques — Gain practical skills in fiber cable handling, splicing, OTDR testing, power budgeting, and network integration specific to mobile backhaul environments.
  • Integration of Fiber with Mobile Site Equipment — Learn how to interface fiber systems with BTS, routers, switches, and aggregation nodes for high-speed data transmission.
  • Understanding Fiber Route Diversity and Redundancy Switching — Explore how traffic continuity is maintained through fiber route diversity and automatic switching to backup routes or redundant microwave links when a primary fiber path fails. Learn how link protection and failover mechanisms are implemented in real-world networks.
  • Real-World Deployment Scenarios — Practice designing, planning, and troubleshooting transmission links within a mobile rollout or maintenance project context.
